Father of Peeps
Ira “Bob” Born, regarded as the “Father of Peeps” for mechanising the process of making marshmallow chicks, has died. He was 98.
Born died peacefully on Sunday, according to Just Born Quality Confections, the 100-year-old family-owned firm he oversaw for much of his life.
On September 29, 1924, he was born in New York City. Sam Born, his father, was a Russian immigrant who founded Just Born shortly before his son’s birth. Later, the family relocated to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where Just Born is currently headquartered.
Bob Born earned a degree in engineering physics from Lehigh University. He joined the United States Navy and worked as a radar expert and lieutenant on a ship in the Pacific. Later, he was transferred to the University of Arizona and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to pursue graduate studies in math and physics.
Born applied to medical school and was admitted, but instead of attending lectures, he chose to work at Just Born. He fell in love with the confectionery industry and chose to remain.
Bob Born in the Candy Business
Just Born purchased Rodda Candy Co. in 1953, a jelly bean manufacturer with a side operation hand-crafting sculpted marshmallow treats. The marshmallows took roughly 27 hours to prepare at the time.
Bob Born noticed the potential of the candies and collaborated with a business engineer to develop and build a machine that could produce them in less than six minutes. The newer machines, which are still based on Bob Born’s design, can now produce 5.5 million Peeps every day.

According to the firm, Peeps are still the most famous candy brand of Just Born 70 years later. Every year, Just Born produces over 2 billion Peeps, or enough to circle the globe twice and a half times. It sells the most around Easter, but it also has variations for Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and other occasions.
Bob Born also created the recipe for another iconic Just Born sweet, Hot Tamales. Mike & Ike fruit chews and Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews are also produced by Just Born.
